Google has launched its new “Backup and Sync from Google” tool which primarily aims to simplify the process of backing up files and photos in the computer.

The utility is meant to replace the existing Google Photos desktop app, as well as the Google Drive client application for both Mac and PC.

With “Backup and Sync” Google has rolled the functionality of both, Google Drive and Google Photos into one application. Google had announced the tool last month but has launched it after several weeks today.

The new tool offers a simple user interface where the user needs to first sign into their Google account, the folders required to be continually backed up by Google Drive is then required to be selected and the rest is done automatically. Existing Google Drive settings will be applied automatically since it will be essentially replacing the Google Drive desktop app.

The new software also can be used to back up photos from USB-connected devices as well as the likes of cameras, as well as SD cards. Once the backup is complete, the files can be accessed in Google Drive from any device this includes any PC/Mac, phone or tablet. Photos and videos on Google Photos will be available for the time being, however, users will have to shift to Backup and Sync in the future.
